would you recommend this as a good beginner rock crawler

Yes - Since a crawler is slow and this is 1/10 scale, it would be very good
It does require battery and charger though

so because the rock crawlers are slower does the battery last longer than a short track truck?

are there different batteries to upgrade to that will hold more power or last longer?

The one I showed is the max in mahs and you will not want a higher voltage

You are not looking for speed so you wouldn't really need a brushless system.
